Understanding and Managing Fearful Behaviour

Nervous dogs or those with specific phobias can exhibit a wide range of anxious behaviours that stem from fear. These dogs may react to everyday situations with trembling, excessive barking, hiding, or even aggression. Common triggers can include loud noises like thunderstorms or fireworks, unfamiliar environments, new people, or other animals.

Phobias in dogs often develop from past traumatic experiences, maltreatment or lack of proper socialisation during critical development periods.

For rescue dogs, a history of neglect or abuse can contribute to heightened anxiety. Even dogs from stable backgrounds may develop phobias if they encountered a particularly frightening experience.

Potential Mistakes

One of the key mistakes owners make with nervous dogs is forcing them into situations that trigger their fear. While it’s natural to want to help your dog overcome their anxieties, pushing them too quickly can worsen the problem. Additionally, consoling the dog excessively during moments of fear can unintentionally reinforce anxious behaviour, signalling that their fear is justified.

Recognising Triggers

Understanding your dog’s triggers and recognising signs of distress - such as panting, pacing, or hiding is crucial.

It's important to manage these fears gradually and patiently, allowing your dog to build confidence at their own pace. Creating a safe space where your dog can retreat during stressful situations can also be beneficial.

How We Can Help

For dogs with severe phobias, professional help may be needed. Di and Linda can work with you to develop a desensitisation plan tailored to your dog’s specific fears, helping them learn to cope with anxiety over time. They may also recommend environmental changes or behavioural techniques to ease your dog's stress.

In all cases, addressing phobias and nervousness in dogs requires a calm, consistent approach. With time and the right support, many dogs can learn to manage their fears and live a more relaxed, happy life.
